Our Mainstream Speech and Language Therapy Team are pleased to offer a range of online workshops, focusing on supporting different aspects of a child’s speech, language and communication skills. They are designed for staff (SENCos, class teachers and teaching/ learning support assistants) working within educational settings.
All training is delivered online via Microsoft Teams. Please see below for more information on the sessions and how to register.
Supporting Speech and Language Skills in Children with Down Syndrome
Thursday 25 September, 1pm to 3pm

This online workshop aims to support education staff working with children with Down Syndrome to:
- Understand the specific learning profile typically seen in people with Down Syndrome
- Understand strategies to support learning in school
- Develop understanding and knowledge about strategies for collaborative working in school
It is useful for staff who are new to supporting children with Down Syndrome at any age in primary school but can also serve as a refresher for staff already supporting children with Down Syndrome.

This online workshop aims to support education staff who are supporting children with speech, language and communication needs in EYFS and KS1 to:
- Develop their knowledge of strategies to support speech and language skills in the classroom.
- Develop their knowledge and skills in order to informally assess a child’s level of understanding in the classroom.
- Develop an understanding about a range of activities/games that can be implemented within the classroom to support the development of a child’s speech and language skills.
Working with Children with Speech Sound Difficulties

This online workshop aims to support education staff working with children and young people whose speech sound production is unclear to:
- Increase their knowledge of when different sounds develop (developmental norms)
- Increase their confidence in identifying changes to speech sounds.
- Develop their understanding of how to work through The Speech Sound Ladder.
- Develop their knowledge and confidence about how speech sound skills can be supported in the classroom and in small groups.

- Develop their understanding of what selective mutism is and how it presents.
- Develop their understanding of the difference between reluctant speakers and selective mutism.
- Develop their knowledge of how a diagnosis of selective mutism is given.
- Develop their knowledge of the intervention process and strategies to support children and young people with selective mutism.
Using Colourful Semantics in the Classroom
