Online speech and language training

Our Mainstream Speech and Language Therapy Team are pleased to offer a range of online workshops, focusing on supporting different aspects of a child’s speech, language and communication skills. They are designed for staff (SENCos, class teachers and teaching/ learning support assistants) working within educational settings. 

All training is delivered online via Microsoft Teams. Please see below for more information on the sessions and how to register.

Working with children with speech sound difficulties

Tuesday 30 April 1-3pm: Register here

Supporingt education staff working with children and young people whose speech sound production is unclear, to:

  • Increase their knowledge of when different sounds develop (developmental norms)
  • Increase their confidence in identifying changes to speech sounds.
  • Develop their understanding of how to work through The Speech Sound Ladder.
  • Develop their knowledge and confidence about how speech sound skills can be supported in the classroom and in small groups.

Top tips for supporting grammar

Supporting education staff who are working with children and young people who had difficulty using different aspects of grammar to: 

  • Develop their understanding of the grammatical terms used by SLTs.
  • Develop their knowledge of strategies and activities that can be used to support grammar development and use (verb tenses, pronouns, plurals, conjunctions).

Using colourful semantics in the classroom

Supporting education staff working with children and young people to:

  • Develop their understanding of the Colourful Semantics approach.
  • Have increased confidence in introducing Colourful Semantics with children and young people in their schools in 1:1 and small group work.
  • Be aware of how to increase the scope of Colourful Semantics in supporting communication skills of children and young people in their school with universal and targeted level activities for the classroom.

  • Develop their understanding of how the Speech and Language Therapy service works within mainstream schools.
  • Have increased confidence about supporting the speech and language skills of all children in their classroom.
  • Be aware of strategies you can use to support understanding in the classroom.
  • Be aware of activities to support vocabulary skills within the classroom.

Social communication skills (general strategies/Lego therapy)

Supporting education staff working with children and young people who present with social communication difficulties/ differences to:

  • Develop their understanding and knowledge about what social communication skills are​ and why they are important.
  • Be able to recognise social skill difficulties in the classroom.​
  • Be able to implement classroom strategies and/or activities for helping with social skills including Lego Therapy.

Supporting children & young people with limited communication

Supporting education staff working with children and young people with limited communication to:

  • Develop their understanding of universal strategies to support young people with communication needs​.
  • ​Develop their knowledge of universal visual support systems. ​
  • Learn about some targeted alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) systems​.
  • Learn about targeted therapy programmes (Intensive Interaction, Attention Autism, Curiosity Approach) to support the development of basic communication skills.

Introduction to speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) for secondary schools

Supporting education staff who are supporting young people with speech, language and communication needs in secondary schools to:

  • Develop their understanding the basic principles of speech, language and communication.
  • Identify speech, language and communication difficulties within the classroom.
  • Develop their understanding and knowledge of basic strategies to support communication in the classroom.

Supporting reluctant talkers and selective mutism in school

Supporting education staff working with children and young people who are reluctant talkers or present with selective mutism to:

  • Develop their understanding of what selective mutism is and how it presents.
  • Develop their understanding of the difference between reluctant speakers and selective mutism.
  • Develop their knowledge of how a diagnosis of selective mutism is given.
  • Develop their knowledge of the intervention process and strategies to support children and young people with selective mutism.

Supporting speech and language skills in EYFS/ KS1

Supporting education staff who are supporting children with speech, language and communication needs in EYFS and KS1 to:

  • Develop their knowledge of strategies to support speech and language skills in the classroom.
  • Develop their knowledge and skills in order to informally assess a child’s level of understanding in the classroom.
  • Develop an understanding about a range of activities/games that can be implemented within the classroom to support the development of a child’s speech and language skills.

How to support children who stammer in primary school

This online workshop aims to support education staff working with children and young people who stammer to in Primary Schools:

  • Develop their understanding of what stammering is.
  • Develop their awareness of how to support children who stammer as well as supporting their family.
  • Develop their skills and confidence to support children who stammer in the classroom.

Supporting vocabulary development

Supporting education staff working with children and young people to:

  • Increase their understanding as to why the development of vocabulary is so important for children.
  • Develop their knowledge as to why children might find it difficult to understand and learn new words.
  • Develop their awareness of and practise practical strategies to support word learning in the classroom.
